What Is Rhinitis?

The medical name for inflammation of the nasal interior is rhinitis. Chronic refers to nasal inflammation that has persisted for more than four weeks. This differs from acute rhinitis, which can persist anywhere between a few days and four weeks.

A disorder known as allergic rhinitis causes symptoms that affect the nose. When you breathe in an allergen, such as pollen, dust, burn pit material, or animal dander, your symptoms become more intense. Chronic sinusitis, a deviated septum, allergic asthma, and other respiratory issues may all be associated. Since allergic rhinitis frequently runs in families, it may already present before exposure to a trigger. Hay fever and allergies are closely related to

Criteria Of Rhinitis VA Rating

The following criteria are used by our department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to rate respiratory diseases such as allergic rhinitis:

  • Rhinitis that has polyps (growths) is given a 30% rating.
  • The prevalence of rhinitis without polyps but at least partial obstruction of the nasal passages—either on one side or ultimately—is 10%.

When allergic or vasomotor rhinitis causes a total obstruction of one nasal canal without polyps or a greater than 50% obstruction of both nasal passages, it is classified as 10% debilitating. When polyps are present, a disability rating of 30% is appropriate. According to the VA disability ratings, allergic rhinitis is compensable. Unless they satisfy the criteria of the different scheduler categories or several conditions combined to reach TDIU as specified by our Department of Veterans Affairs, most ratings qualify at the 10% or 30% level. If there are any polyps present, that will significantly impact the ranking (nasal growths). However, if your condition doesn’t appear to be adequately reflected by those ratings, then typically, only these two ratings are available for people with allergic rhinitis.
